Wavelength, Charlotte Amalie, and the Long Refit Toward Hurricane Season

After Wavelength reached the Virgin Islands, the story did not end with landfall.
The first chapter was about weather, steering, Bermuda, and the Coho Ho Ho Rally. Part Two is quieter, but just as important. It is about what happens after the emergency energy fades and a cruising boat still has to be lived aboard, repaired, insured, planned, and protected for hurricane season.
In Charlotte Amalie, the questions became practical.
Where do we get parts?
Where do we stage repairs?
Is this paint failure serious?
Is the aluminum hull compromised?
Where can the boat safely wait out the next season?
HAL Mariner helped sort those questions one at a time.
When bubbling paint appeared around lockers and deck areas, HAL helped frame the issue clearly. The concern was not treated as panic and not dismissed either. The working assessment was that on an aluminum boat, the visible bubbling was most likely paint-system failure or surface corrosion under paint, not fiberglass osmosis, not structural failure, and not an immediate seaworthiness crisis.
The practical guidance was simple: check, observe, avoid unnecessary tearing apart, and plan the proper repair for the next yard period.
That kind of answer matters. Cruisers under stress can see every defect as a catastrophe. HAL did not replace the yard, surveyor, or experienced marine trades. It helped organize the question so the crew could talk more calmly with the people doing the work.
Charlotte Amalie also became a logistics base.

Wavelength: When HAL Became Part of the Crew
Two days before leaving Hampton on a rally passage, Bill Frost and Michele Brown aboard Wavelength loaded HAL. What followed became one of the clearest real-world demonstrations of why SSCA is moving toward HAL-supported communications and cruiser support tools.
During a dangerous offshore passage toward Bermuda, Wavelength encountered severe conditions, heavy seas, steering failure, and rudder/steering-system damage. The crew reported 15–20 foot seas, repeated cockpit flooding, manual steering for more than 18 hours, autopilot/heading problems, and the need to divert toward Bermuda for fuel, inspection, and repairs.
Through the event, HAL was used as an advisory support layer: helping interpret steering-system symptoms, identify likely failure points, structure emergency communications options, support routing toward Bermuda, and provide a quick St. George’s port-support snapshot. SSCA contacts and Bermuda support information were also coordinated as the crew worked the problem offshore.
After arrival in St. George’s, Bermuda, Bill wrote: “We survived with your help and Hal! Truly.”
