Our current boat, a 36’ Endeavor catamaran, Half Moon, is in our home port of Rock Hall, Maryland. Since 1979, my wife, Marty and I have sailed together on this boat, as well as 3 previous cruising sailboats, throughout Chesapeake Bay and eventually, the entire east coast.

My first boat was a Klepper folding kayak. A string of 9 sailboats, 5 tenders and 3 kayaks followed. Several of our sailing dinghies were used in Barnegat Bay, NJ, and all our cruising sailboats (26’ Seafarer, 29’ Columbia, 31’ Allmand) were homeported in Chesapeake. We have also taken a canal motorboat through the Burgandy canals of France and have done a bareboat sailing charter in the Sporades Islands of Greece.

Once we retired, we were able to cruise extensively, from Penobscott Bay, Maine through Key West and the Bahamas. We have cruised the ICW 6 times, as well as taking several trips to Narragansett Bay, Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Due to health reasons, our sailing is now confined to US waters only, and we do hope to cruise this winter to the Florida Keys and the Dry Tortugas.

I have taken the USCG Auxiliary course on coastal navigation and my wife and I have participated in two Safety at Sea seminars.

We have been members of SSCA for about 10 years and have volunteered at several GAMs as well as the SSCA booth at the Annapolis Boat Show. I have also been on the planning committee for the last 2 Chesapeake GAMs. At last year’s GAM, we presented a workshop on Cruising While Aging…something we are increasingly becoming masters of! In my experience, SSCA brings all the components of cruising into focus; it integrates skill sets related to seamanship, fellowship with the sailing community, and the adventure of sailing to new places on our own boat.

Mike started his sailing career racing dinghies on inland lakes in the 70’s before graduating to small offshore boats raced on Lake Erie during the 80’s and 90’s. In 2002 Mike and crew Andrea sold their Olson 25 and bought a Catalina 36 to try cruising, thus ending the racing . After two summer cruises to Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron they transited the Erie Canal in 2013 and relocated their sailing to Annapolis. Semi-retirement meant moving to Williamsburg VA and Deltaville as a new home port. Since then they have cruised much of the Chesapeake and mixed in winter cruising to the Bahamas and Florida.

During the 80’s and 90’s Mike was very active in the Midget Ocean Racing Club (MORC), campaigning a J24, Santana 23, and an Olson 25. He served MORC as a member of its International Board of Governors, Commodore of MORC Station 14, and as an official measurer. Mike co-chaired and was race chairman for the 1993 MORC International Regatta. Both he and Andrea were long standing members of the Sandusky Sailing Club and of the Great Lakes Cruising Club.

Mike attended Rhodes University in South Africa, Miami University and Case Western Reserve University. He is an attorney and now a (mostly) retired partner in a multi-state law firm where his practice was in taxation, estate planning, business succession planning, charitable planning and exempt organizations. Mike currently serves as trustee of several charities and foundations and plans to bring that experience to SSCA if elected.
