2019 Recipients

Rich Boren, Third Day

Rich offered his leadership skills to SSCA thru multiple boards, including a term as president during significant changes which brought stability to SSCA operations.

Anne Lloyd, Sofia

Anne provided exceptional leadership when filling a vacant board position at a time of great organizational need.

Thom Unger, Baggywrinkle

Thom provided continued service and leadership to the board and his volunteer work on SSCA social media greatly aided SSCA during a time of crisis.

2018 Recipients

Rick Peterson, Believe

Rick has served with distinction on the Board of Directors for three years and is responsible for starting our photo contest which allows all of us to experience moments and places all around the world. Rick and his wife, Julie, have thousands of blue water miles to their credit, but still find time to volunteer in Rwanda providing surgical skills and counseling for months each year since 2015.

Kathy Barth, Five & Dime

During Kathy’s three-year term on the Board, she served one year as vice president and this past year as president. Honoring Kathy with the Service Award does not speak strongly enough of her dedication to SSCA, her outstanding leadership and her caring, cheerful approach to moving the Association forward. As she and Curt continued to maintain their cruising lifestyle, Kathy was always available. Kathy’s style of management, her willingness to listen, and her ability to bring people together sets a high bar for future leaders of SSCA.

Bob Osborn, Pandora
George VanDrasek, Peace & Quiet

Bob and George approached the Board of Directors more than six years ago about starting the Essex Gam and took on the task themselves. They developed the gam into an excellent program that members look forward to each year. Bob and George are passing the torch as coordinators but SSCA is grateful for their contributions and initiative.

Keith Davies and Nicki Dunbar, Sionna

When Keith and Nicki took over as coordinators of the Penobscot Bay Gam they elevated the event by creating a partnership with the Maine Sail Power & Steam Museum where the event is now held each year with a potluck and keynote speaker. Keith and Nicki recently evaluated their life goals and are moving in another direction so they have stepped down as coordinators but SSCA is appreciative of their years of service to this gam.

Greg and Mary Jerrell, Remedy

Greg and Mary had been attendees at the Annapolis Gam for several years before taking on the daunting task of coordinating the gam late in the planning process this year. They agreed to the role and quickly stepped into action leading the planning committee on a search for an alternate venue when the first location fell through. Greg and Mary kept the committee focused with their effective leadership style and produced a successful gam along with their team despite the location and timeline challenges.

Beth VandeGeijn,Wayward Wind

Beth served as a volunteer at the Annapolis Gam for many years but stepped up to the plate as volunteer coordinator this year. Not only did she coordinate the volunteers but she served as an integral member of the planning committee by acting as logistics liaison with the Maryland Yacht Club since she conveniently lives in the area.

Steve Rosenthal

Steve has served as our treasurer for the entire three years of his term. He has significantly increased our sponsor contributions and your benefits using his sales talents. Though he and his wife, Ruth, have swallowed the hook in Massachusetts, their years of cruising experience and their contributions to SSCA speak volumes.

2016-Steve Kauffmann and Betty Romberg

Steve Kauffmann served a 3-year term on the Board of Directors, including 1 year as Board President.

Betty Romberg served a 3-year term on the Board of Directors.

2015 - Scott Berg, Chardonnay and Sherry McCampbell, Soggy Paws

Scott served 6 years on the Board of Directors, including 2 years as Board President.

Sherry McCampbell served 3 years on the Board of Directors, including 1 year as Board Vice-President.

2014 - Dave Skolnick, Auspicious

Dave Skolnick was presented with a service award as a retiring SSCA Board Director having completed a three-year elected term.

2013 - Melinda Schell, Seaschell

Melinda was presented with the Service Award as a retiring SSCA Board Director having completed a three-year elected term.

2012 - Chad Carvey, Tambadil

Chad was presented with the Service Award for his hard work and dedication as a retiring SSCA Board Director and President, having completed a three-year elected term.

2011 - Harriet Gardner Eisen, Perseverance

For her dedication to SSCA as a retiring SSCA Board Director who completed a three-year elected term.

2010 - Marcie Lynn, Nine of Cups and Craig Briggs, Sangaris

Marcie Lynn, Nine of Cups served on the SSCA Board as a Director for a three-year elected term.

Craig was presented with this award as retiring SSCA Board Director and Board President, having completed a three-year elected term and a one-year appointed term.

2009 - Jack Tyler, Whoosh and Ernest Kraus, Magic Kingdom

Both Jack and Ernest completed three-year elected terms on SSCA's Board of Directors. Jack served as the president of the Board as well.

2008 - Nancy Zapf, ***Halekai* and Steve Leeds, *Maccabee***

Steve completed a a three-year elected term as an SSCA Board Director. He also served two years as an SSCA Foundation trustee.

Nancy completed a three-year elected term as a SSCA Board Director and served two one-year board appointments.

2007 - Kathleen Watt, Rennaisance

Kathleen completed a three-year term as a Board Director and as President of the Board for two of those three years.

2004	Edie and Larry Smith, El Unicorn, for their work with the “School Supplies for The Bahamas Project” Kathy and Dick Oberle, Arianna, for their work with “Boaters for Books” Lin and Larry Pardey, Taleisin, for all the great things they’ve done for the cruising community with their books and support Luc Callebaut and Jackie Lee, Sloepmouche, for providing assistance to cruisers for many years, giving radio help and support, sharing information, and whatever is needed.
