Study of the Oceans health...

by Balme » Tue Feb 26, 2013 12:13 am

Plymouth University (UK) have apparently started a project to study the health of the ocean by measuring the plankton population - and are asking for sailors to participate. Create a Secchi disc and measure how deep it is before it disappears from view, record that data an upload it via mobile app once you're within signal range.

Thought some of you might like to assist...

I have no affiliation with any of this - haven't even downloaded the app yet!

Haha - I just finished posting essentially the same thing under 'Underway' and 'Families'! So we've got that topic covered pretty well. I did a search for 'plankton' but didn't find anything, then went ahead and posted it. Anyway, I hope cruisers of all ages start doing this, it looks pretty easy. If I were 'out there' I'd take a piece of string or very light rope, mark it off every foot or 25 cm or whatever, make a disk out of aluminum painted white, and drop it over every hour or so (is that too often?); mark the time of day and location; (would the weather - bright vs. overcast, etc., would be significant?) and when possible upload to the mobile app.

I think this is just one of many bits of data that cruising sailors could provide to the scientific community.
