Android AIS App

Android AIS App

by tomj » Mon May 11, 2015 4:17 pm

I know there are lots of Android AIS apps out there, but has anyone had GREAT success with a particular app?? Also, I've seen a few apps that transmit your own boat ais info, as well as receive AIS from other vessels (including CPA info, Vessel Name, etc.). Do these work independently of the 'internet' or cell phone coverage?? (i.e. offshore between eastern Florida coast and the Abacos- our primary cruising area.) Any suggestions appreciated.

The Android apps (and all phone apps) use the internet to receive AIS data, so they will not work beyond the range of WiFi or cell network. The apps that send your AIS-type data are also using the internet and your position will only show up on compatible apps. Other boats with "classic" AIS will not see your data.

If you are heading offshore and want AIS you will need an actual AIS receiver or transponder.
