Wind generators

by michaeldillard » Mon Jan 29, 2018 8:23 pm

Hello! We are currently outfitting our v42 Tayana as we plan to cross and sail the Med next year. We are researching wind generators and would welcome any input. Opinions and experience with different brands are welcome.

Michael,
We have solar, wind and hydrogenerators on our boat and rarely need to run the diesel gen. Each type of alternate energy gen has it place for usage. The wind gen was our first on the boat and worked well at anchor and most points of sail except dead down wind. Adding solar was a game changer and worked the most consistent, over all produced more energy for the initial $$ spent. The only time the solar wasn't great was during stormy days, then the wind gen kicked in. Still even on stormy days, the solar was still producing some energy. Next came the hydro since we needed more under passage to keep up w/the AP. If you have a wind vane you probably don't need the hydro. To keep this short, for lots of reasons we can have one and mainly our boat is too big. It's 400W and works well when the boat is moving > 5 kts.

Getting to you question, if I had to purchase a new wind gen, it would be the D400. Like ours, it's very quiet but the D400 puts out much more power. Need to mount it as high as possible. We have a mizzen mast and was very surprised at the increased energy production when we removed the wind gen off of our previous boat (sloop) and mounted it up higher on the mizzen.

In reality, for the cost difference and energy output, the solar is the way to go. Put as much on the boat as you can fit.

Cheers.

Thank you so much! We will definitely check out the D400. We have solar on our boat and it is perfect when the sun is shining. Our concern was power at night on a 2 week passage from the Azores to Portugal. Appreciate your reply.
